Bubbly flow structure in hydraulic jump

چکیده

In an open channel, a hydraulic jump is the rapid transition from superto sub-critical flow associated with strong turbulence and air bubble entrainment in the mixing layer. New experiments were performed at relatively large Reynolds numbers using phase-detection probes. Some new signal analysis provided characteristic air–water time and length scales of the vortical structures advecting the air bubbles in the developing shear flow. An analysis of the longitudinal air–water flow structure suggested little bubble clustering in the mixing layer, although an interparticle arrival time analysis showed some preferential bubble clustering for small bubbles with chord times below 3 ms. Correlation analyses yielded longitudinal air–water time scales TxxV1/d1 of about 0.8 in average. The transverse integral length scale Z/d1 of the eddies advecting entrained bubbles was typically between 0.25 and 0.4, irrespective of the inflow conditions within the range of the investigations. Overall the findings highlighted the complicated nature of the air–water flow. © 2006 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Bubbly Two-Phase Flow in Hydraulic Jumps at Large Froude Numbers

A hydraulic jump is a sudden, rapid transition from a supercritical flow to a subcritical flow. At large inflow Froude numbers, the jump is characterized by a significant amount of entrained air. For this paper, the bubbly two-phase flow properties of steady and strong hydraulic jumps were investigated experimentally. The results demonstrate that the strong air entrainment rate and the depth-av...

Interparticle arrival time analysis of bubble distributions in a dropshaft and hydraulic jump

The analysis of bubble clustering in air-water flows may provide some measure of the bubble-turbulence interactions. A cluster of bubbles is as a group of two or more bubbles, with a distinct separation from other bubbles. This paper compares the results of a clustering study in a dropshaft and in a hydraulic jump to point out differences/similarities between those complex turbulent flows. The ...

Modeling Air Entrainment and Transport in a Hydraulic Jump using Two-Fluid RANS and DES Turbulence Models

Both RaNS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) and DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) type turbulence models were used in conjunction with a two-fluid model of bubbly flow and a new subgrid air entrainment model to predict air entrainment and transport in a hydraulic jump. It was found that the void fraction profiles predicted by both methods are in agreement with the experimental data in the lower sh...

Experimental Study of the Effect of Gabion Structure on the Energy Dissipation of Submerged Hydraulic Jump Downstream of Ogee Spillway

In the last decade, the use of gabion structures in hydraulic engineering for stabilizing the structure due to its high density and weight has become widespread. Also, the material's roughness and porosity cause it to be used in energy dissipation and drainage projects. This study evaluates the relative energy dissipation of gabion structures downstream of the ogee spillway in the conditions of...

Characteristics of S-jump on Roughened Bed Stilling Basin

Formation of hydraulic jump is necessary for dissipation of the excess kinetic energy downstream of spillways and gates. Hydraulic jump stilling basins of sudden expansion are one of the energy dissipater structures which are used where the available tail water depth is less than the required sequent depths. In the present study to further reduce the hydraulic jump sequent depths ratio, a rough...
